Good News for IMS Authors
The MTT Transactions is instituting a change in its extended 2009 IMS conference paper selection policy to both encourage conference participation and better disseminate significant conference results to its readers. The policy change applies to both submissions to the 2009 IMS Special Issue and to later regular submissions to the Transactions that are based on accepted 2009 IMS papers.
Under the new policy, submissions to the Transactions must still be expanded over the IMS conference version, and new results are encouraged. However, unlike other submissions, expanded conference submissions to the MTT Transactions may be based largely on the IMS conference paper, and may repeat key results reported in the conference version.
Be sure to reference your IMS conference paper in your submission to the Transactions, and describe differences between the two papers in the introduction.
If you are considering writing a paper for the 2009 International Microwave Symposium IMS) or the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques (T-MTT), the submission deadline for 2009 IMS papers is 8 December 2008; see IMS2009.org/cfp.html for details.
Student Design Competitions at IMS 2009
Student High Efficiency Power Amplifier Design Competition
The fifth Student High Efficiency Power Amplifier Design Competition will be held at IMS2009. The contest will take place at the Interactive Forum on Tuesday. The amplifiers will be tested to verify their performance and will be on display during the competition. The contest is open to all students and graduate students registered at an educational establishment. The competitors are required to design, construct, and measure a high efficiency power amplifier, at a frequency of their choice above 1 GHz but less than 20 GHz, and having an output power level of at least 5 Watts, but less than 100 Watts into a 50 ohm load.
A call for this competition can be downloaded here: http://www.ims2009.org/pdfs/PA-POSTER-IMS2009.pdf
Student Low Noise Amplifier Design Competition
The Low Noise Amplifier Design Competition is open to all students registered at an educational institution. Competitors are required to design, construct, measure, and demonstrate a low noise amplifier at 2.45 GHz. This project will introduce students to low noise wireless technology.

Student Contest: Packaged Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) Filter
IEEE MTT-S Technical Committees MTT-12 (Interconnects, Packaging, and Manufacturing) and MTT-8 (Microwave Filters, Multiplexers, and Passive Components) are co-sponsoring a “Packaging Contest” at the IEEE International Microwave Symposium IMS2009 to be held at Boston, MA. The contest will be similar to the successful contest at IMS2008 in Atlanta, GA.
This contest is open to all IEEE MTT-S members who are enrolled as students at a university. The objective of the contest is to demonstrate new and effective packaging and interconnect techniques, for a stringent microwave UWB filter application. Proposals are due by March 15, 2009. After the submission of a proposal describing the proposed solution, all contestants will be provided a pre-defined package provided by Stratedge. Teams of up to four (4) student members are allowed, provided each team member has a direct contribution to the solution.
For more information, please visit the contest announcement at the MTT-12 web site.

CFP: 2009 IEEE Sarnoff Symposium
2009 IEEE Sarnoff Symposium
March 30, 31, & April 1, 2009
Princeton, NJ, USA
Submission deadline: December 9, 2008
Since 1978 the IEEE Sarnoff Symposium has been bringing together a tremendous and rich diversity of telecom experts from industry, universities, and government. The popularity of the Sarnoff Symposium, again being held in the historic Nassau Inn located in the heart of downtown Princeton, continues to grow as the premier forum for researchers, engineers, and business executives in the North East drawing an attendance from all over the world. Besides the technical paper presentations, the Symposium will include tutorials, student paper poster presentations, executive panels, and exhibitions.
The 2009 Sarnoff Symposium (Mar. 30 to Apr. 1, 2009) is soliciting state-of-the-art research papers and tutorial proposals in the following areas of interest: (1) Communication Systems, (2) Communications Theory, (3) Military Communications, (4) Multimedia Applications & Networking, (5) Optical Communications & Networking, (6) RF and Microwave Techniques, (7) Wireless Communications. The submission process is carried through EDAS conference management system (http://edas.info/) by December 9, 2008, in pdf format. All accepted papers (after review by experts in the field) will be presented in oral sessions, will be included in the 2009 IEEE Sarnoff Symposium proceedings and will be published through IEEEXplore.
